If there’s one thing we know about the Scots, it’s that they don’t shy away from celebrating their heritage. And when you’ve got things like kilts, bagpipes and highland dancing in your cultural roster — why would you?
Williams and McDaniel Property Management has put together a brief roundup of events at this year’s Fergus Scottish Festival (550 Belsyde Avenue East). And, conveniently enough, Wellington Court Apartments (455-475 Maiden Lane) are just three kilometres from the celebrations.
The Fergus Scottish Festival (which runs August 7-9) is the oldest three-day festival of its kind in North America, having started in 1946, and draws in some 30,000 visitors annually. The festivities include heavy events, dancing, piping, clan education, main field events, a beer tent, vendors and all sorts of interactive family fun, including a McKiddies centre!
The Fergus Scottish Festival will also be host to a few new events this year, including a Friday night concert featuring Scotland’s own Red Hot Chilli Pipers, a workshop series featuring highland dance, piping and gaelic lessons, a Family Day and picnic areas.
During this year’s Highland Games portion of the festival, an attempt to break a world record will take place! That’s right, on Saturday, August 8, international, national and local athletes will gather to try and break the Inverness Highland Games World Masters Guinness World Record for most cabers tossed simultaneously. You don’t want to miss it.
After you’ve gotten your fill of Celtic music, strength competitions, dancing and vendors, why not relax with some local grub at a nearby pub? O’Brien’s Tap House (216 St. Andrew Street West) is only half a kilometre from Wellington Court Apartments, and the Goofie Newfie Pub and Grill (105 Queen Street West) is just a 10-minute walk away.
