Look for the blue

Recycling in Wellington County is relatively simple. Keep an eye out for a blue bin. These specially coloured containers are for recycling only. They are collected weekly in city limits and bi-weekly in less populated areas. Items that can be recycled include flattened cardboard, paper of all types, aluminum, tin, glass and plastic bottles, jugs and tubs.
Watch the waste

Not everything can be recycled. Some household items, such as fluorescent light bulbs, everyday batteries or aerosol cans, require special disposal. Electronics, including computers, printers and phones also require special disposal. You can safely recycle these items at one of five waste facilities located in Wellington County near your Fergus apartment.

An easy opportunity to recycle

These centres also hold special event days to encourage residents to recycle these products properly. The next nearby event day will take place on September 12th at the Aberfoyle Roads Garage (7396 Wellington Road 34). Drop off your hazardous waste here between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The garage is about a ten-minute drive from the Executive Suites at 338 Gordon Street.

Give to those in need

Before you throw something out, even for recycling, ask yourself whether it might be useful to someone else. Gently used clothes, furniture, books and more can be taken to a secondhand store and resold at a lower cost to someone in need. In the City of Fergus, goods can be donated to the BMF Fergus (525 Maple Street). This not-for-profit thrift store sends proceeds to support the Bible League of Canada. The store is a five-minute drive or a ten-minute bike ride from Aberdeen Apartments (91 Westminster Crescent).

The blog team at Williams and McDaniel hopes today’s post provides some extra motivation to start or continue recycling whenever possible. For more information about their Fergus apartments, visit their website today.

Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) are a cost-effective option that use significantly less energy, cause less pollution and are extremely versatile. To educate residents of the Fergus Apartments, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together some green benefits and other things to know about CFL lighting.

Energy Efficiency

One of the most notable benefits of CFL bulbs is their energy efficiency. When compared to other light bulbs, a CFL uses 50 to 80 percent less energy to produce the same amount of light. Williams and McDaniel’s Wellington Court Apartments are all fully equipped with CFL lighting and for replacement bulbs drop by The Home Depot located at 63 Woodlawn Road West, which is a 19-minute drive from the apartments. The Executive Suites at 470 Elora Street and Executive Suites at 474 Elora Street are a 17-minute drive from the store, while the Executive Suites at 952 Kelsowood Lane are a 20-minute drive and the Executive Suites at 338 Gordon Street are a 10-minute drive from the store.

Money Savings

While the initial cost of a CFL is pricey, these light bulbs have a lifespan that is 10 times longer than the traditional variety, which means they need to be replaced less often. Standard incandescent bulbs will last for a year, but a CFL can last anywhere from 8 to 10 years and will produce the same amount of light at a lower energy cost. Recent experiments have illustrated that CFLs can burn brightly for 10,000 hours, whereas incandescent bulbs burned for just 800 to 1,500 hours. CFLs do boast a higher price tag, but they’ll ultimately save you money in the long run.

Pollution

Switching to CFLs can help you limit your harmful impact on the environment. Over the course of its life, a CFL saves 450 pounds of carbon dioxide from being produced and entering the environment. Located at 345 The Boardwalk, Lowe’s has a large selection of lighting options, including CFLs. The Executive Suites at 352 Gordon Street, Executive Suites 19 Victoria Crescent, Executive Suites at 908 Kelsowood Lane, Executive Suites at 912 Kelsowood Lane and Executive Suites at 466 Elora Street are all less than 45 minutes away from the store by car.

Versatility

One of the great things about CFLs is they can be used in almost any light fixture that currently accepts a traditional bulb. If you are using them for three-way lights, dimmers or outdoors, you might need a special variety of CFL as traditional CFLs might have a shortened lifespan with these functions. Drop by Dixon Home Hardware Building Centre located at 745 Saint David Street North for spare light bulbs and other energy efficient options. The Executive Suites at 645 St David North,

Executive Suites at 916 Kelsowood Lane, Executive Suites at 920 Kelsowood Lane, Executive Suites at 924 Kelsowood Lane and Executive Suites at 342 Gordon Street are less than a 15-minute walk and less than a five-minute drive from the store.

Switch out traditional light bulbs for CFLs and enjoy the benefits of energy efficient, cost-effective lighting. Williams and McDaniel’s Wellington Court Apartment units are fully outfitted in CFL lights to provide you with a brighter, greener rental option.

Perfect plants for every room in your Fergus Apartment

apartments for rent in Fergus, gardening, apartment living, Fergus Apartments, Apartments Fergus, Apartments for Rent in Fergus, Fergus apartment rentals, Apartments in Fergus, Apartment rentals in Fergus, Fergus Apartments for RentAdd some lush greenery into your life by incorporating plants into each and every room of your Fergus Apartment. From plants in the kitchen that will add spice and flavour to your dishes, air-cleaning plants in the bedroom and colourful varieties to liven up your apartment’s common spaces, plants are a great investment to make. Many of these plants are low-maintenance, which means you don’t have to worry if you’re a first-time gardener. To help outfit your entire apartment in foliage, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together a list of plants that will thrive in each of your apartment’s rooms.

Kitchen

Add some deliciously fresh flavours and accents to your dishes by growing herbs right in your apartment. Basil, oregano, sage and rosemary all enjoy a large amount of sunlight and should be placed in your apartment’s south-facing window. These options are great for seasoning meats, pasta sauces and even bread. For east – or –west – facing windows, bay, parsley and thyme are all great options to choose form. Use parsley to garnish dishes and add an extra note to salads and soups or incorporate thyme into your meat marinades. Get great advice on plants and a complete horticultural experience at LittleTree Garden Market. The store located at 17 Side Road 18 is a four-minute drive and 26-minute walk from the Wellington Court Apartments and a three-minute drive and 18-minute walk from the Executive Suites.

Bathroom

If your bathroom décor is a little dull and you’re looking to liven things up, plants that require low light and humid conditions are an ideal choice. With its long, dark green glossy leaves and ability to live under the worst light conditions, the Cast Iron Plant is perfect for those who want greenery without too much commitment. This plant isn’t too picky about temperature and can get by without frequent watering. For a more aesthetically pleasing option, the Peace Lily is a great choice with many varieties to choose from. Most peace lilies feature creamy white flowers with long-lasting glossy green leaves that tolerate low light. These lilies are also among the few air purifiers that blossom into flowers. Offering only the freshest floral arrangements and plant options, Patti’s Flower Boutique is a great place to visit to get plants to outfit your entire Fergus apartment. Located at 259 Grange Road, the store is a 22-minute drive from the Wellington Court Apartments and 24-minute drive from the Executive Suites.

Bedroom

Breathe easier in your apartment with plants that purify and enhance the existing air quality. Luckily, there are a variety of plants available that do this very thing and look good too. The Snake Plant absorbs carbon monoxide and releases oxygen into the air. Place a few of these sharp-leafed plants in your bedroom space for an oxygen boost while you catch some shuteye. For cosier spaces with minimal light, English Ivy is a plant worth considering. The plant’s dense foliage is great at absorbing formaldehyde, which often appears in carpet dyes and floorboards.

Living Room

Enhance the common areas of your apartment by incorporating options like Coleus and Summer Snapdragons into the space. The Coleus plant comes in a variety of stunning colours and is a great choice if you’re looking for bright blossom to fill up a vase. Add a delicious grape scent and colour bloom to your home with the help of the summer snapdragon. Both these options are sure to brighten your apartment’s atmosphere. Drop by Sheridan Nurseries Limited for exceptional products of exceptional quality and knowledgeable staff that can help you make the right selection. Located at 100 Elmsdale Drive, the nursery is a 41-minute drive from the Executive Suites and a 42-minute drive from the Wellington Court Apartments.

Infuse nature into your surroundings by placing some of these plants around your apartment. Located at 455 – 475 Maiden Lane and 908 Kelsowood Lane, Williams and McDaniel’s Fergus Apartments offer a selection of exquisite suites available for rent.

Three Resolutions for your apartment in 2014

apartments for rent in Fergus, apartment living, holidays New Year’s is fast approaching and it’s always good to have resolutions on hand. Writing them down or simply thinking them up in advance can go a long way to ensuring that you actually follow through with them. Resolutions aren’t limited to weight loss goals and new hairstyles, you can also make them for your apartment lifestyle. To get residents started on their goals, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has a few resolutions and suggestions for your Fergus apartment.

Spruce Up Your Wall Décor

Whether you moved into the Fergus apartments several months ago or never got around to decorating, the New Year is the time to make your apartment feel more like home. Perhaps you’re bored of the existing décor and are looking for a way to refresh the walls. Luckily, changing wall décor is considerably less expensive than buying new furniture. Drop by Dixon Home Hardware Building Centre to pick up everything from wall decals to frames so you can breathe new life into your apartment’s walls. The store located at 745 St. David Street North is a two-minute drive and 13-minute walk from the Wellington Court Apartments, a four-minute drive and 17-minute walk from the Grandview Apartments and a two-minute drive and 19-minute walk from the Executive Suites. Get Renter’s Insurance

There are a variety of benefits for apartment dwellers looking for renter’s insurance. These include compensation in case you suffer a loss or damage, so that you won’t be liable and you’ll have added security knowing your precious possessions will be protected. It is important to remember that even though your landlord might have insurance, this won’t help you if your personal property is damaged or destroyed. A good renter’s insurance policy will pay you after you experience a loss and will protect you against liability claims that others make against you. Drop by Steven Lund’s State Farm Agent Office located at 198 Saint Andrew Street West to find out more about insurance. The Fergus apartments are less than a 10-minute drive and 25-minute walk from the insurance office.

Be a Better Neighbour

When it comes to living in an apartment having good neighbours goes a long way to making your rental experience a positive one. If there has been past tension between you and your neighbour, it might be time to leave that in the past. Handling these situations proactively and head on will help both you and your neighbour going forward. Soon enough you’ll be living in an apartment where you and your neighbours share a mutual feeling of respect.

Located at 455-475 Maiden Lane, 320 Queen Street East and 952 Kelsowood Lane, Williams and McDaniel’s Fergus apartments are set in a friendly and quaint neighbourhood, which make them an ideal option for those currently looking to rent.

Keeping your houseplants alive through the winter

apartments for rent in Fergus, gardening, winter, apartment livingHaving some greenery in your Fergus apartment is a great way to enhance and infuse the space with a touch of nature. However, the winter season can often be a challenging time for houseplants, as they are unaccustomed to winter’s short days and the dry heated air of Canadian apartments. Today on the blog, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel has some advice to help your plants thrive during the chillier months.

Pre-Winter Routine

Make sure to remove dead, damaged or yellowed leaves and to trim away weak growth to allow healthier growth to thrive. Be sure to give your plants a shower to remove any dust and dirt from the leaf’s surface for full light exposure. Visit Floral and Hardy Gardens located on 6729 Leslie Lane, a 40-minute drive away from Wellington Court apartments, the Grandview apartments and the Executive Suites. If your plants dry out faster than you can water them, it may be worthwhile to repot them into slightly larger containers. This is also a good time to cut off any dead roots and thick taproots, to make reom for the growth of new healthy roots.

Take Dry Air into Consideration

During the winter months, the average humidity in a residence drops to about 15 percent. As a result, houseplants release water through transpiration as fast as or even faster than they can absorb water. For plants this can cause leaves that are wilted, curled up and have brown tips. Purchasing a humidifier will help raise the humidity to 50 percent. Located on 63 Woodlawn Road West, Home Depot is a half hour away from the Fergus apartments and sells an assortment of humidifiers for every budget. When multiple plants transpire together this creates a considerable amount of natural humidity, so it is best to closely group plants and remember to place those with thin leaves in the centre. If this still isn’t enough, consider building a humidity tray in your apartment by following the steps on the ‘Brooklyn Orchids’ blog. If you’re looking to stock up on more plants, Sheridan Nurseries Limited located on Elmsdale Drive is less than 50 minutes away from the apartments.

Lighten Up

Winter days are short and cloudy, which means minimal light. Try moving plants to a bigger, brighter location like a south-facing window and placing them near, but not touching, the glass. Pick up everything you need to light up your plants by taking the 15-minute drive to Rona located on County Road 18 Elora.

Feeding Your Plants

If your plants aren’t getting enough light don’t feed them, as this will encourage weak and straggly growth. Throughout the winter, indoor gardeners usually apply one-quarter of the recommended dose of all-purpose fertilizer to their plants at each watering. Doing this provides enough fertilizer for plants growing under lights and those that are growing under weaker natural light. A common watering strategy is to wait until plants dry out a little. Every three or four days sink your finger into the soil to the second knuckle to see if it feels dry. If so, water the plant until the excess runs into the pot’s saucer. For those times when you’re running low on fertilizer or plant supplies, Crawford’s Garden Centre located on 8689 5 Side Road is 50-minute drive from all of the Fergus apartments.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy the company of your houseplants all year round. For additional advice when it comes to making sure you plants stay perky over the colder months, the ‘alive’ Indoor Winter Gardening article is a great read. Located within walking distance of a variety of amenities including schools, a farmer’s market and walking trails, Williams and McDaniel’s Fergus apartments offer convenient access and unparalleled service.
