Make your curtains do double-duty

They also function to keep out light, contain warmth and block heat from entering the apartment. To ensure Fergus apartment residents are taking full advantage of their curtains, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together some tips that will help you select blinds and curtains that will serve more than one purpose.

Keep out Light
If you’re trying to keep the light out of your apartment’s rooms, drapes are an ideal solution. Adding blackout liners to the backs of your existing curtains is an effective and cost-effective method. This fix will make curtains thicker and get you the desired effect without spending a ton of money. Another option that awards you more flexibility involves pairing a translucent curtain with a separate blackout curtain. This method will allow you to alternate between filtering light with the translucent curtain and complete darkness with the blackout fabric.

Contain Warmth

Switching up your curtains every season will extend their life and will save them from fading. Fight the cold on a budget by keeping the curtains of the south, east and west-facing windows open on sunny days and closing them at night to reduce heat loss. Drapes and curtains have been shown to reduce heat loss in winter by up to 10 percent.  Thick and heavy insulated fabrics are the best option, as they will prevent cold air from seeping into your apartment and warm air from escaping it. Located at 100 Century Drive in Orangeville, Connie’s Custom Curtains has a large selection of blinds and curtains to choose from. The Executive Suites at 908 Kelsowood Lane and Executive Suites at 912 Kelsowood Lane are a two minute-drive and an eight-minute walk from the store. The Executive Suites at 19 Victoria Crescent are a two-minute drive and a 13-minute walk, the Executive Suites at 352 Gordon Street are a 31-minute drive and the Executive Suites at 466 Elora Street are a seven-minute drive and 41-minute walk.

Block Heat

Drawing the curtains during the day is an easy and effective way to keep the hotter temperatures out of your apartment space. Curtain materials also play a role in the temperature of your apartment. Lighter, more breathable fabrics like cotton will deflect the sun’s rays while thicker fabrics will lock in heat.

Privacy

With a large selection of graphic patterns available, curtains not only provide privacy, but they’ll also enhance your apartment’s personality. Drop by Mary’s Draperies & Curtains located at 764 Willow Road in Guelph and peruse their large selection of curtains and drapes. The Wellington Court Apartments are a 25-minute drive, the Executive Suites at 952 Kelsowood Lane are a 27-minute drive and the Executive Suites at 474 Elora Street are a 22-minute drive from the store. The Executive Suites at 338 Gordon Street is an 11-minute drive and 38-minute transit commute from the store.

Take these guidelines into consideration and make your curtains do more than one job. Located at 470 Elora Street, 654 Saint David Street North, 916 Kelsowood Lane, 920 Kelsowood Lane, 924 Kelsowood Lane and 342 Gordon Street, Williams and McDaniel’s Executive Suites at the Fergus apartments offer residents great rental opportunities and unparalleled customer service.

Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) are a cost-effective option that use significantly less energy, cause less pollution and are extremely versatile. To educate residents of the Fergus Apartments, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together some green benefits and other things to know about CFL lighting.

Energy Efficiency

One of the most notable benefits of CFL bulbs is their energy efficiency. When compared to other light bulbs, a CFL uses 50 to 80 percent less energy to produce the same amount of light. Williams and McDaniel’s Wellington Court Apartments are all fully equipped with CFL lighting and for replacement bulbs drop by The Home Depot located at 63 Woodlawn Road West, which is a 19-minute drive from the apartments. The Executive Suites at 470 Elora Street and Executive Suites at 474 Elora Street are a 17-minute drive from the store, while the Executive Suites at 952 Kelsowood Lane are a 20-minute drive and the Executive Suites at 338 Gordon Street are a 10-minute drive from the store.

Money Savings

While the initial cost of a CFL is pricey, these light bulbs have a lifespan that is 10 times longer than the traditional variety, which means they need to be replaced less often. Standard incandescent bulbs will last for a year, but a CFL can last anywhere from 8 to 10 years and will produce the same amount of light at a lower energy cost. Recent experiments have illustrated that CFLs can burn brightly for 10,000 hours, whereas incandescent bulbs burned for just 800 to 1,500 hours. CFLs do boast a higher price tag, but they’ll ultimately save you money in the long run.

Pollution

Switching to CFLs can help you limit your harmful impact on the environment. Over the course of its life, a CFL saves 450 pounds of carbon dioxide from being produced and entering the environment. Located at 345 The Boardwalk, Lowe’s has a large selection of lighting options, including CFLs. The Executive Suites at 352 Gordon Street, Executive Suites 19 Victoria Crescent, Executive Suites at 908 Kelsowood Lane, Executive Suites at 912 Kelsowood Lane and Executive Suites at 466 Elora Street are all less than 45 minutes away from the store by car.

Versatility

One of the great things about CFLs is they can be used in almost any light fixture that currently accepts a traditional bulb. If you are using them for three-way lights, dimmers or outdoors, you might need a special variety of CFL as traditional CFLs might have a shortened lifespan with these functions. Drop by Dixon Home Hardware Building Centre located at 745 Saint David Street North for spare light bulbs and other energy efficient options. The Executive Suites at 645 St David North,

Executive Suites at 916 Kelsowood Lane, Executive Suites at 920 Kelsowood Lane, Executive Suites at 924 Kelsowood Lane and Executive Suites at 342 Gordon Street are less than a 15-minute walk and less than a five-minute drive from the store.

Switch out traditional light bulbs for CFLs and enjoy the benefits of energy efficient, cost-effective lighting. Williams and McDaniel’s Wellington Court Apartment units are fully outfitted in CFL lights to provide you with a brighter, greener rental option.

Bypass the traditional variety and opt for alarm clocks that donate money every time you hit snooze, display gentle white lights and vibrations and force you to move around to shut them off. To give residents of the Wellington Court Apartments and Executives Suites an idea of the unconventional alarm clocks that are currently on the market, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together a list of a few that are worth checking out.

Clocky Alarm Clock

If you’re the kind of person who needs a jumpstart or a jolt in the morning, the Clocky Alarm Clock by Nanda Home is a product that was made with you in mind. This quirky clock jumps three feet from your nightstand and rolls away beeping to motivate you to get up – as it literally forces you to chase after it. For those who love hitting their snooze button, you can only hit snooze once so use it wisely.

Shape Up Alarm Clock

Start your day off with a workout by making the Shape Up Alarm Clock by Fred and Friends part of your morning routine. Simply set this dumbbell-style alarm clock and in the morning this workout-conscious invention will annoyingly buzz until you’ve completed 30 reps.

“Snooze You Lose” Alarm Clock

With the SnūzNLūz (TM), the age-old adage of “if you snooze you lose” has never been truer. By connecting via Wi-Fi to your online bank account, this ingenious alarm donates real money to an organization of your choice every time you hit the snooze button.

Light Alarm

Imagine waking up to a simulated sunrise, listening to the weather report, daily news or your favourite tunes. All of these can be accomplished with the Bio Brite Sunrise Clock Radio. Users have the ability to program their own sunrise and sunset for 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes and additional features are available including a backup audible alarm, a snooze option, nightlight options and even a security feature that can alert you that someone is at home. You can also choose between 12 or 24-hour time read-outs depending on your personal preference.

Silent Alarm

Avoid the unpleasant sound of your alarm clock going off in the morning by opting for one that wakes you up without any sound. This conceptual alarm clock by designer Johan Brengesjo wakes you up with gentle vibrations and can be set to snooze with the shake of your hand. However, each time you hit the snooze button, the alarm requires greater movement than it did before to disable it. This will make sure you can catch a few more zs without being late for work, school and/or appointments.

Lightsleeper Alarm Clock

Designed as a pillow and a duvet, the Light Sleeper has been built to make the body react to an imitation of sunrise using electroluminescent technology. Over a 15-20 minute period, the bedding will start to glow and wake up the user in a gentle, soothing and natural way. One of the main selling points of this creative alarm clock is its ability to use people’s natural body clocks to wake them up.

With these unusual and inventive alarm clocks, your mornings will definitely be a lot more entertaining and enjoyable. Most of these options are available online or at larger novelty shops. Located at 455-475 Maiden Lane and 342 Gordon Street, Williams and McDaniel’s Wellington Court Apartments and Executives Suites are an ideal rental option for those currently looking in Fergus.

Kitchen

Add some deliciously fresh flavours and accents to your dishes by growing herbs right in your apartment. Basil, oregano, sage and rosemary all enjoy a large amount of sunlight and should be placed in your apartment’s south-facing window. These options are great for seasoning meats, pasta sauces and even bread. For east – or –west – facing windows, bay, parsley and thyme are all great options to choose form. Use parsley to garnish dishes and add an extra note to salads and soups or incorporate thyme into your meat marinades. Get great advice on plants and a complete horticultural experience at LittleTree Garden Market. The store located at 17 Side Road 18 is a four-minute drive and 26-minute walk from the Wellington Court Apartments and a three-minute drive and 18-minute walk from the Executive Suites.

Bathroom

If your bathroom décor is a little dull and you’re looking to liven things up, plants that require low light and humid conditions are an ideal choice. With its long, dark green glossy leaves and ability to live under the worst light conditions, the Cast Iron Plant is perfect for those who want greenery without too much commitment. This plant isn’t too picky about temperature and can get by without frequent watering. For a more aesthetically pleasing option, the Peace Lily is a great choice with many varieties to choose from. Most peace lilies feature creamy white flowers with long-lasting glossy green leaves that tolerate low light. These lilies are also among the few air purifiers that blossom into flowers. Offering only the freshest floral arrangements and plant options, Patti’s Flower Boutique is a great place to visit to get plants to outfit your entire Fergus apartment. Located at 259 Grange Road, the store is a 22-minute drive from the Wellington Court Apartments and 24-minute drive from the Executive Suites.

Bedroom

Breathe easier in your apartment with plants that purify and enhance the existing air quality. Luckily, there are a variety of plants available that do this very thing and look good too. The Snake Plant absorbs carbon monoxide and releases oxygen into the air. Place a few of these sharp-leafed plants in your bedroom space for an oxygen boost while you catch some shuteye. For cosier spaces with minimal light, English Ivy is a plant worth considering. The plant’s dense foliage is great at absorbing formaldehyde, which often appears in carpet dyes and floorboards.

Living Room

Enhance the common areas of your apartment by incorporating options like Coleus and Summer Snapdragons into the space. The Coleus plant comes in a variety of stunning colours and is a great choice if you’re looking for bright blossom to fill up a vase. Add a delicious grape scent and colour bloom to your home with the help of the summer snapdragon. Both these options are sure to brighten your apartment’s atmosphere. Drop by Sheridan Nurseries Limited for exceptional products of exceptional quality and knowledgeable staff that can help you make the right selection. At-home remedies for common summer troubles

Fergus Apartments, Apartments Fergus, Apartments for Rent in Fergus, Fergus apartment rentals, Apartments in Fergus, Apartment rentals in Fergus, Fergus Apartments for RentMaking the most of summer can occasionally leave you with burns, bites, blisters, rashes and poison ivy. Luckily, there are at-home remedies for these problems that will help you bypass that long line at the walk-in clinic. To help Fergus apartment residents ward off these summer time woes, our preferred property management company Williams and McDaniel has put together some remedies that you can whip up in the comfort of your apartment.

Blisters
Often caused by excessive friction on moist skin, blisters are something all of us have run into a time or two. It is extremely important to keep your blisters clean with soap and water and to minimize additional friction to the skin by dabbing on petroleum jelly. Keep the blister covered with a clean Band-Aid or apply moleskin for additional protection. The moleskin pad should be left on for two days. Applying calendula ointment, aloe vera gel or a cold, wet washcloth can also help soothe and heal this sensitive wound. Get all the supplies you’ll need at Shoppers Drug Market located at 710 Tower Street South, which is a four-minute drive from the Wellington Court Apartments and a seven-minute drive from the Executive Suites.

Sunburn

It’s a good idea to apply sunscreen whenever you leave the house, but we understand that sometimes the sun sneaks up on you. If your burn extends all over your body, try a cool bath with products that have oatmeal infused in them or good old-fashioned oatmeal from the pantry. You can also try soaking a cloth in green tea, which contains ingredients to protect against UV damage, and using it as a compress or mixing peppermint oil and water for an aromatic and cooling remedy. If you don’t have painkillers on hand, rubbing the area with sliced cucumbers or potatoes will reduce the swelling and cool the area and aloe vera or a homemade baking soda and vinegar paste will ease the pain and itching that often accompanies burns. Target Pharmacy located at 900 Tower Street South has everything you’ll need to get on the mend. The store is less than 10 minutes away from both the Fergus apartments.

Insect, Spider, and Tick Bites
Help heal your bug bites and protect yourself from future attacks with these tricks. If you have been stung by a bee or anything with a stinger, it is important that you scrape away the stinger as soon as possible without directly pinching it. Once the stinger is out, relieve swelling and redness by soaking the area in apple cider vinegar, or applying an ice pack to numb the area. For less severe bug bites, you can use lavender oil, tea tree oil, deodorant and anti-itch creams to reduce irritation. You can pick up most of these ingredients at FreshCo located at 753 Saint Andrew West. The Wellington Court Apartments are a three-minute drive and the Executive Suites are a seven-minute drive from the store.

Poison Ivy
Despite all the signs and information known about Poison Ivy, a lot of people fall victim to it during the summer months. Use a slice of fresh aloe vera or a few leaves from a common lawn weed to create a great anti-inflammatory and antibacterial remedy. To stop the spread of poison ivy, make sure you wash all the clothes you were wearing when you touched the plant, rinse off your shoes and put them in a separate laundry cycle. Use a vinegar compress to dry out the rash, dab on some calamine lotion or soak a cloth in cold milk. The milk will be more soothing to your skin than cold water. You can also use witch hazel, used tea bags, oatmeal and Epsom salts to battle the itch.

Take on everything that summer throws at you by using these at-home remedies that will heal you in no time at all. Located at 455-475 Maiden Lane and 908 Kelsowood Lane, Williams and McDaniel’s Fergus Apartments offer residents an ideal rental option conveniently located within walking distance to the Farmers market and scenic trails.
